Albert Fornatus Thompson, 90, died on May 14, 2026 in Orem, Utah surrounded by his family following complications from a hip and femur break.
He was born on March 18, 1936 in Payson, Utah to Fornatus Oscar and Lavina Marchant Thompson. He had one brother, Evan and two sisters, Mary and Maxine. He grew up on a small farm in Salem, Utah. Albert graduated from Spanish Fork High School and then served a mission for the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern States Mission. Upon his return, he graduated as an Electronic Technician from the Central Utah Vocational School.
Albert married Faye E. Wittwer in the St. George, Utah LDS temple on April 29, 1961. They recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. They have 5 children: Elaine Parker (Dave), Scott Thompson (Denise), Sherri Dumbrell (Greg), Paula Winchell (Jared), and Jamie Duncan (Jonathan). They have 19 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
He was hired as a US government employee with his first job being at Hill Field Air Force Base near Ogden, Utah. He then worked at the Federal Aviation Agency in Las Vegas, Nevada before concluding his career with the National Weather Service in San Diego, California. After retirement at the age of 55, Faye and Al moved to Orem, Utah and then later to Lindon where they have lived a happy life surrounded by many of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Albert was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of his life. He served in numerous callings, finding particular joy in his role as a ward clerk for many years. While in San Diego, he was ordained a seventy and was called as a ward mission leader where he helped lead dozens into the church. We’re so happy he can be a missionary once again on the other side! He’ll be remembered for his big smile, friendliness and firm handshake. He loved a project and could build or fix anything. When he wasn’t working on something at home, he would be helping a neighbor or
throwing a street party which included his famous homemade root beer. Many have fond memories of “Big Al”.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He is survived by his wife, Faye, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a community of friends who will forever cherish the impact he made in their lives.
Funeral services for Albert will be held Friday, May 22, 2026, at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, located on 731 East Center Street, Lindon, Utah.
