Elizabeth Ann Backus Flegal, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, passed away peacefully, at home, on August 17, 2023. She was 90 years old.\n\nLibby was born on March 25, 1933 to William Elmer and Goldie Elizabeth Smith Backus, in South Charleston, Kanawha, West Virginia. She moved to California when she was 15 years old.\n\nShe met her eternal sweetheart, Clarence Cecil Flegal, at a local park which was near the USO building. Each of their groups of friends would hang out at the park and attend the dances at the building. In 1951, they married and went on to have seven children. Sharon Schallock (Bob), James, Kurt, Gay Angus (Rod), Tina Jespersen (Hank), Lisa Mulvey (Kevin), and Linda Franc (Mark).\n\nLibby was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in October of 1968 and Clarence a year and a half later and then they were sealed to each other and to all of their children for all eternity in the Los Angeles, California Temple.\n\nShe volunteered for the City of Pleasant Grove, Utah and served as the Chairman of the Neighborhood Advisory Board and faithfully attended all bi-monthly meetings as well as the weekly city council meetings, where she took notes and typed up the minutes. Her volunteer work kept her on top of what was happening not only in her neighborhood but also in the surrounding neighborhoods. She served for twenty-two years at which time they held a party honoring her and insured her an award.\n\nLibby’s hobbies were mainly reading. She absolutely loved to read. She could go through four or five books in a week sometimes. She would even cook dinner with a book in her hand. Even as young as Junior High, Elementary School, she would come home and change her clothes to go play and she would get side tracked reading a book. She would lie in bed at night reading her book from the light under the door from the hall. She claimed she never took naps, but when caught asleep with a book resting on her lap or on her chest, she was adamant, “I was just resting my eyes!”\n\nShe was an exceptional cook, her house was always clean and perfectly organized, every drawer, every cupboard, every nook, nothing was out of place.\n\nLibby was predeceased by her parents William Elmer and Goldie Elizabeth Backus-Stowe, her son James, and her grandsons Matthew and Jordan.
