Herbert William Gilbert, 89, of Pleasant Grove passed away Monday, March 2, 2015, from a recent illness. Herb was born October 21, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY to Herbert and Margit Andreasson Gilbert .\n\nIn 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served four years. He was stationed in North Africa during WWII. Upon returning home he settled in Hutchinson, Kansas, there he met and married Edna Mix and to this union four children were born. He received his associate degree at Hutchinson Junior College. While in Hutchinson, he was introduced to the missionaries and baptized along with his family to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1948. He then moved the family to Utah to further his education at BYU, majoring in Elementary Education. While teaching 5th grade at Central Elementary in Pleasant Grove, he completed his masters and 5th-year specialist degree at BYU and continued teaching for 19 years. He then became a principal at Lindon and Greenwood Elementary schools. In 1987 he retired after 34 years in education.\n\nHis first marriage ended, and in 1975 married Myrna Gammon in the Provo Utah LDS Temple. Together they had two children. Herb has been a faithful member of the LDS church serving in many positions including an ordinance worker in the Mount Timpanogos Temple.\n\nHerb is survived by his wife Myrna and children: Margret (Fields), Herb Jr. (Charlotte), Mike (Julie), Tony (Ruby), Holli (Matt Bingham), Heidi, 19 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.\n\nFuneral services will be held Monday, March 9, 2015, at 11:00 am in the Grovecreek 2nd Ward, 475 North 700 East, Pleasant Grove. Family and friends may attend a viewing Sunday evening from 6-8 pm at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the Church on Monday from 9:30-10:30 am. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Perpetual Education Fund or the Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.\n\nThe family wishes to thank all the doctors and medical staff who served Herb through his recent illness.\n\nCondolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
