It felt as though we would never lose this gracefully stoic woman, but on Sunday, September 12, 2026, June Jeanette Kunz Winter passed away peacefully at 12:10 a.m, just as she would have wanted: holding the hands of those she cherished the most.
In life, Jeanette was a steady, strong figure who met trials, tribulations, and triumphs with class and quiet dignity. Born in June 1931 in Wardboro, Bear Lake County, Idaho, to Martin Marion Kunz and Genevieve Pugmire Keetch, she was the fifth of six children.
Jeanette grew up learning the value of hard work and the power of music, taking piano lessons in her adolescence while helping run the family farm. She graduated from Montpelier Idaho High School in 1949 and went on to attend Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University), earning a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Home Economics with a minor in Art that furthered her talent and ear for the piano.
It was at Utah State that she met Leslie “Ben” Winter. They married June 25, 1953, in the Salt Lake Temple and began their much-too short life together. Jeanette spent her career teaching Home Economics across Virginia, Idaho, and Utah, all while raising four sons: Leslie Jr., Leon, Jeffrey, and Ryan. She even found time to serve faithfully in her church, including a decade as Stake Relief Society President in Tulsa, Oklahoma and many more decades as a dedicated ward organist.
Ben preceded her in death 38 years ago. Since that tragic loss, Jeanette poured her steady, joyful presence into her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, never missing a game (or a chance to keep score), a recital, or an important family-centered event.
She is survived by her four sons, Leslie, Leon, Jeffrey, and Ryan, their spouses, her 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
