Lloyd W. Atkinson returned to his heavenly home on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at the age of 81. He was born on October 29, 1940 in American Fork, Utah to Eugene and Edna Weeks Atkinson.
Lloyd grew up in Pleasant Grove during each school year then spent summers with his family at Deer Creek Campground in Provo Canyon where he spent his days fishing and enjoying the outdoors. When he was older his family moved to Manilla, Utah where he loved life on a farm, especially horseback riding.
He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1957. While there he was a wrestler and, as a sophomore, he placed in the Utah State Wrestling Tournament. After high school he attended Utah Trade Technical Institute and became a licensed electronic technician. He got a job at Tooele Army Depot and worked there until he retired.
Lloyd noticed his sweetheart Coleen one night at the Jack and Jill Bowling Alley in American Fork. They had known each other for years but this time he asked her out on a date. One thing turned into another and they were married on September 15, 1966 in Pleasant Grove. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti, Utah Temple. When Lloyd married Coleen she had 3 little children under the age of 8. He instantly loved them and was able to adopt them and call them his own. He was a kind, loving and fun dad, a great blessing in their lives. He encouraged his children and supported them in everything they did.
Lloyd enjoyed being able to continue camping at his family's property in Provo Canyon near the river. He loved hunting, fishing, boating, bowling, horseback riding, playing games with kids, rodeos, the Utah Jazz, Elvis and going on vacations with his family. He also liked to cook, becoming very good at it in recent years.
If there was an award for the best grandpa in the world he would surely win it. He became a grandpa at 35 years old and embraced it wholeheartedly. He greeted each new grandchild with love and joy. He truly treasured each one of them and he strived to let them know what a blessing they were to him. He supported them in everything they did including attending all sports events they participated in, dance recitals, piano recitals, other musical performances, plays, graduations, hunts, pinewood derbys, school programs, birthday parties, missionary work, rodeos, horseback riding, graduations, marriages and so much more. He also supported and took much joy in each of his great-grandchildren.
Lloyd and Coleen looked forward to bowling on a league together, fun vacations, work trips, cruises and going south for the winter in their trailer where they enjoyed time with family and friends. They also liked to bottle fruit and vegetables together. They made celebrating with their loved ones so fun, such as when they would have 4th of July parties before the fireworks and festive Christmas Eve parties.
Lloyd will be deeply missed by his sweet wife Coleen and his children Tammra (Tim) Salisbury, Chad (Julie) Atkinson and Todd (Jill) Atkinson as well as 14 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Beverly Jean (Larry) Hansen. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers and their wives Delbert (Karla) Atkinson and Tom (Ruth) Atkinson. He is also preceded in death by his great-grandson Dawson Joseph Lindstrom. We are comforted with the thought of the reunion we know they are enjoying.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Ryan and Amy Lindstrom (granddaughter) for caring for Lloyd so lovingly and selflessly for the past two years. Amy was his rock and his joy.
