Maurice LaVern "Vern" Davis Obituary (1941 - 2017)

Maurice LaVern "Vern" Davis, age 76, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2017 at his home in Orem, Utah. He was born in St. Anthony, Idaho to Floyd Irvin and Carrie Crapo Davis on July 8, 1941. He married Karen Emma Browning in 1968 in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple. Vern was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served an honorable full-time mission in the Eastern States Mission, serving in areas of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania from 1961 to 1963. He held various callings in his wards, and most recently served as an ordinance worker in the Mt Timpanogos Utah Temple for 10 years. Vern graduated from South Fremont High School in St. Anthony, ID in 1959. He continued his education at Ricks College in Rexburg, ID and graduated with an Associate degree in 1961. He later received a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ in 1969. He loved to learn and continued reading and researching new things throughout his life, particularly in the fields of electronics, computer technology, and healthcare. Vern had a tremendous work ethic and was very successful in his career. He helped pioneer the field of power plant automation during his 27 years working for Honeywell. He was a lead developer on the document compare feature during his 5 years working at WordPerfect. He was a valuable asset to his employers, earned many prestigious awards for his work, and was well respected by his peers. Vern earned his Amateur Radio license while he was in high school (call sign K7ATT, operator class Advanced) and he enjoyed spending time with his radios using the antenna towers he built. He designed and built electronic devices, and he helped invent the technology used in pulse oximeters. He could often be found in his hobby room with the smell of a soldering iron present. He was also very fond of remote controlled model airplanes, and had a small collection of R/C planes that he flew. Vern is survived by his wife Karen of Orem, UT, his children Kathy (Scot) Brooksby of Highland, UT, Kimberly (Ryan) Whitney of Spanish Fork, UT, Laurie (Justin) Olsen of Spanish Fork, UT, Carolyn (John) Fulton of Riverton, UT, Steven (Danielle) Davis of Pleasant Grove, UT, and Camille Davis of Orem, UT, eighteen grandchildren, and two siblings Dean (Melba) Davis of Peoria, AZ, and Alice (Dennis) Ostermiller of Hyrum, UT. Vern is preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Carrie, his sister Carma (DeWane) Lords, and brother Darrell (Joyce) Davis. A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 S 300 E, Pleasant Grove, Utah. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 2, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the LDS Chapel at 1090 N 400 E, Orem, Utah with a viewing from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
