Robert Devere Hudson passed away in Taylorsville, Utah on Friday, January 31, 2025 after a life well-lived. Robert was born on April 27, 1947 to Twila Wendt and Jesse Hudson in Hot Springs, South Dakota. He was raised by his mother for only a short time before he lost her to cancer at 4, and he was only 13 when his father also passed away from cancer. He and his brother Dennis were raised by their foster parents, the Morrisons. He met the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints when 17 years old, and after his baptism he decided to study at Brigham Young University. Robert majored in History at BYU and enjoyed participating as a team manager of the track team. His love of sports led him to a career in writing about sports of all different types for his hometown newspapers, first in Idaho Falls, and later in Provo, St. George, and in Blackfoot, Idaho.
While at BYU he met and married the love of his life, Becky Lange. The two of them were made for each other. They shared many of the same interests, and their love of watching and discussing sports created a bond that they shared all the way through Robert’s time in the care center, where Becky would come every day to enjoy one another’s companionship while they watched whatever game might be on TV, whether basketball, football, the Olympics, or almost anything else.
Robert and Becky also shared a deep commitment to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a love of family. They raised six children together and did their best to teach them the principles of the gospel, as well as the love of sports. Robert and Becky both volunteered countless hours as coaches for the many different teams their children played on, taking time to patiently teach the fundamental skills of T-ball, baseball and basketball. Each of their children participated in sports throughout their childhood and youth, and into their high school years. Two of their sons, Corwin and Nathan, developed the same intense love of sports of their parents which leads them to watch many games and follow the exploits of multiple teams. But some of the most treasured memories of each of their children involve attending sporting events together with their parents as a precious time to bond with one another.
Robert was well-known in the community and had many friends and acquaintances everywhere he went. He knew many of the best athletes and coaches from Utah personally, as well as many who participated in high school and college sports just for fun. He also made numerous friends through his active participation in church, and he enjoyed spending time with and serving others in many ways through his church callings. He also spent many years in the armed forces, serving first in the army in Korea and later as a member of the Utah National Guard in public relations.
Robert remained true to the principles of the church that he valued so highly, setting an example of fatherhood, church service, and hard work. He is survived by his dear wife Becky, five sons and one daughter: Corwin (Farrah), Noel (Luciana), Shayne (Cydni), Nathan, Kellen (Natalia) and Kareena, as well as eleven grandchildren, and his brother Dennis (Shirley).
